The Health Benefits of Banaba
Banaba [ Scientific name: Lagerstroemia speciosa]
Banaba has been a popular medicinal plant in the Philippines for the treatment of urinary tract infections. Most of our grandparents would acknowledge that banaba has been used for over 50 years. It is a tree commonly found in the provinces; its beautiful blue-violet colored flowers make the banaba tree an ornamental tree used also as shades for parking lots and roadside landscaping. You will find several of these in the South Luzon Express Way and at the Alabang Town Center parking lot.
Banaba is also a famous medicinal plant in ayurvedic medicine mainly to lower blood sugar and reducing weight agent. The Philippine banaba has become popular with respect to its anti-diabetic properties. Banaba tea is famous as a health drink in Japan and in the U.S. Technically, the active principle is considered to be corosolic acid, a triterpenoid compound, which promotes glucose transport or utilization in the body cells. The current thinking is that banaba can lower glucose independent of pancreatic insulin. This makes the active principle of banaba a natural form of insulin from plants.
With the reduction of blood glucose is the concomitant reduction in body weight, apparently due to the better control of carbohydrate. The weight reduction was seen even without dietary restrictions.
The leaves are generally used to make a concoction or tea, but the bark, flowers and fruits can be used as well. If you want to prepare your own banaba tea, get mature green leaves and chop them. The ratio is 1 part chop banaba leaves to 3 parts water boiled for about 15 minutes (low heat). You can drink this tea 3 or 4 times a day. If you want some twist in the flavor with added value of herbs, you can add “tanglad” or lemon grass with local citrus such as “kalamansi.”
There are no known side effects or toxic reactions of banaba. In fact, it has been reported that banaba can help detoxify the body and protect the liver. Banaba tea can be considered a health drink.

From Dr. Aligui: try to take luyang dilaw tea o gumawa ka ng salabat gamit ang luyang dilaw. Take 1 cup 2x daily –trial lang ito kung mababawasan ang gas sa tiyan mo at humupa ang maaring namagang lining ng tiyan mo mula sa hyperacidity.

Can banaba be used to cure vertigo the natural way? About 10 years ago I had consulted a physician and he prescribed Serc, 8 or 16 mg. After taking Serc for a week, I was completely relived. However, for a long time I ceased taking Serc as I never experience dizziness anymore. Late last year I had a recurrence of dizziness which I associated with my previous vertigo illness. As always, taking Serc would bring instant relief. Yet I always try to avoid taking the medicine except if dizziness is unbearable. Am 51-years old and works as a researcher-professor in a government academic institution.

From Dr. Aligui: No banaba is not for vertigo. Treatment of vertigo has not been satisfactory in medicine, all of the drugs are meant to reduce symptoms. The current thinking of the cause of vertigo is mostly due to calcium deposits in the vestibular canal and up to now none has come up with a cure. Some of the natural remedies for vertigo are: increase magnesium intake say from nuts. Since calcium metabolism or absorption is dependent on magnesium. Also positional adjustment thru yoga.
doc i would like to ask if enduranz could help me on my ovulation, i have polycystic ovaries that alters my ovulation. i’ve been monitored by an ob-gyne for almost 7 months now, gave me provera every month to menstruate and 3 cycles of clomid to ovulate. on the 3rd cycle only 1 egg cell was noted to have a prominent measurement of 1.3cm x 1.05cm. is enduranz safe to be taken by female to increase the possibility of pregnancy?

From Dr. Aligui: The size is already large but you can try the combination of balbas pusa, banaba, sambong and luyang dilaw (Renalin) 1 capsule 3x a day. A minimum of 6 weeks would be recommended but it may take longer than 3 months for some. I would advise you to have an ultrasound after 2 months to check the stones.

From Dr. Aligui: Not all fatty liver are abnormal, it can be due to fatty diet. Avoid fatty diet and reduce your weight if you are overweight. Take salabat made of luyang dilaw or tea make of sinta leaves (Andrographis paniculata) which can protect the liver. Turmeric or luyan dilaw can be bought from the local market and also from supermarkets. Sinta plant can be bought from the Bureau of Plant Industry (San Andres Manila). Two to 3 leaves of sinta with boiling water is the tea preparation.

what is more effective, sambong capsule (Re-leaf) or Renalin? I am now taking Re-leaf 500mg, 2 tablets 3 times a day for my 0.8cm stone (right kidney). I intend to continue this medication for one month, then i’ll have another KUB(ultrasound). Or shall i continue medication for 3 months before another KUB?

From Dr. Aligui: Re-leaf has only sambong and Renalin has sambong, balbas pusa, banaba and luyang dilaw which works better than just sambong. Natural treatment is usually 3 months. Check by KUB and if ok monitor your urine crystals every 3 months. You can try Renalin for a more shortened period for maintenance –example, every time your urine crystals are high (+++).

L-carnitine and lemon balm can help. L-carnitine has been around -in juice drinks and oral supplements. Lemon balm is not easily obtained but it is used as tea. These can only support hyperthyroidism not a cure.

From Dr. Aligui: banaba cannot be used for children. If there is already glomerulonephritis, children must be monitored carefully by a pediatrician-nephrologist. Do not give herbals such as banaba or even sambong. Glomerulonephritis is a complex disease.

From Doc Emil: Banaba has been studied already. Corsolic acid as well as the other components of banaba has been studied by the Japanese, they have the patent on this. I would advise you to do other kinds of thesis fit for medical technology. Try exploring the diagnostic procedures for diseases such as PCR or a simple procedure but high impact would be the examination of the value of urine specific gravity and crystalluria among patients with urinary calculus.

Doc, thank you for your advice. Below is my January 2010 comment for your reference. Early this year, i was diagnosed to have a 0.76cm stone in the right kidney. I was told by our company physician to take rowatinex for 2 weeks, which i did. Then I consulted you, and you advised me to take sambong (releaf capsule 600mg 3X a day), so i did for almost 2 months. I also doubled my water intake and stopped drinking soda.
I had my 2nd ultrasound of KUB this month, and the result: my kidney stone is gone!

doc, i was diagnosed to have a .76cm stone in my right kidney. I want to know if this size is considered “small†or “large†kidney stone.
I know for a fact that taking sambong capsule 3X a day can pass kidney stone through urination, if the stone is “smallâ€, im not sure for large ones. is .76cm stone considered small? is there a range of measurement to consider a kidney stone “small or largeâ€?
meantime, i was adviced by our company physician to take rowatinex capsule for two weeks. i’m thinking now after reading your blog, to take sambong capsule instead.

Doc, thank you for your advice. Early this year, i was diagnosed to have a 0.76cm stone in the right kidney. I was told by our company physician to take rowatinex for 2 weeks, which i did. Then I consulted you, and you advised me to take sambong (releaf capsule 600mg 3X a day), so i did for almost 2 months. I also doubled my water intake and stopped drinking soda.
I had my 2nd ultrasound of KUB this month, and the result: my kidney stone is gone!
