Acne or pimples are a common problem of teenagers and even young adults. There are only very few medicinal plants for acne if ever and most of these are based on the alleviation of infection involving pimples.

Turmeric or popularly known as luyang dilaw is an effective medicinal plant for acne since it promotes healing and acts as anti-inflammatory medicinal plant. Turmeric contains curcumin which inhibits most of the inflammatory reactions of the body especially the skin. It also promotes cleansing of the body as well as liver detoxification.

Prepare turmeric tea to be taken 1 cup two times daily. An inch of luyang dilaw can be pounded and boiled in 2 glasses of water for 5 minutes, keep in the refrigerator no more than 2 days if there will be some left. Another way is to make turmeric tea granules. Peel a rhizome of turmeric and grate it. In a very hot iron pan put the grated turmeric and sort of fry the grated  turmeric for a few minutes. Keep the pan uncovered until it cools. Scrape the turmeric and keep it in clean jar. To make your daily tea, just put ½ teaspoon of turmeric granules in a cup of very hot water, stir and steep for about 5 minutes before drinking the turmeric tea.

    Hi there Dr. Aligui,

Last July I underwent breast ultrasound and found out that there are 5 lumps on my breast and some of the lumps are not suspected to be benign. So the doctor advised me to undergo biopsy but am afraid to undergo such thing. Are there remedies that these lumps be dissolved without undergoing operation/biopsy? If there are ways naturally, what are those and how to prepare it? Are there foods or things that are not good for me? If there are what are those. Thanks and God bless.

    Cora Quintos

From Dr. Aligui: Turmeric was reported to protect breast cancer patients from recurrence. So this implies that you have to have surgery. Also for successful cancer therapy, one can take turmeric tea to prevent recurrence. Although there were reports of breast cancer survival with herbal treatment, no formal clinical trial has been done. It is a matter of choice, seek the opinion of at least 2 physician specialists so you can be informed.

    hi doc,

my mom is currently on dialysis, can you recommend herbal for her. pls include also how should it be taken, i,ve read that turmeric tea is good. pls. help thanks doc!

    ———-
Basically, for kidney health, the idea is to preserve the kidney tissues from being destroyed by inflammation. This is the value of turmeric. However, if the dialysis is because there are no longer kidney tissues functioning, then it will just be a dependent case on dialysis. Many vegetables and plants can help because these are based on anti-oxidant properties of plants. Any plant with low protassium can be used. You can choose from ampalaya, malunggay; sprouts such as broccoli, alfalfa, etc. They can be eaten as is or as vegetable juices. Dialysis patients should be careful on fruit juices because of the risk of increase in potassium levels which damaged kidneys cannot handle properly.

hi doc..is turmeric or luyang dilaw is good to prevent from boils?…

—-No information on that, it is still up to you to determine how to use it. However, people who have taken turmeric as tea have observed less inflammation of acne.

Just crush the luyang dilaw and then boil to make “salabat”. 1/2 inch of turmeric o luyang dilaw boiled in 2 glasses of water is enough maintenance for health.
