Ampalaya [Scientific name: Momordica charantia]
How can bitter gourd (ampalaya) help our body?
Ampalaya is a remarkable health food. Historically, bitter gourd has been around for quite a long time, more than the time of the parents of our great grand parents, I believe. However it was only during the early 1940s that health information on ampalaya got into scientific literature. What we also know is that bitter gourd (or variety of bitter gourd) is heavily consumed by the Amazons and Brazilian indigenous people. So that this vegetable has a long history of being a safe food and a health tonic.
Although animal studies have shown that ampalaya lowers blood glucose, there’s still a lack of a “large enough study†that fully document the benefits of ampalaya. Be as it may, there have been “large enough†anecdotes that claim that ampalaya is beneficial in diabetes, alone or in combination with medicines prescribed by doctors. Even more interesting is the report that amplaya lowers the fat in our blood and makes us resistant to infections, both viral and bacterial. To some extent, historically, people have used the juice of bitter gourd as topical medicine for wounds. If this is not enough, know this: there are now reports that ampalaya can protect us from developing cancer in the same way our body naturally protects itself against emerging cancer cells. These would mean that ampalaya enhances our immune system to fight cancer and infections. Isn’t it that great? Why wait to get sick? Start taking ampalaya supplements as early as possible. Ampalaya is also rich in antioxidants that protect the cells of the body from damage of free radicals (metabolic by-products, usually waste).
How should we use it?
For people who are well, eating ampalaya as part of the diet is very important. However, one would soon succumb to boredom in eating ampalaya, so it becomes less interesting to eat and you may run out of recipes. If you can eat it raw, the better but better is bitter. So we get into the convenience of ampalaya in capsules. Not just 500 mg per capsule; as we know that is the minimum. Be informed of the products out in the market; choose the one that can give you more per capsule. Otherwise you end up popping up so many capsules a day.
The bottom line is: use ampalaya to prevent disease rather than a cure for disease. Curing disease is more expensive than preventing disease, so, for those who have a family history of diabetes and cancer, take ampalaya capsules now as part of your dietary supplement. Start bringing back what we lose in processed food.

michelle hypertensives can definitely take ampalaya without any problem. There is no scientific test showing that ampalaya can negatively affect people suffering from high blood.
Clincal Trials on Ampalaya Plus (Ampalaya-Banaba-Luyang Dilaw) Food Supplement show that taking Ampalaya Plus helps people with high blood.

Not true there is no basis to show that Ampalaya is bad for hypertensive people.

Cassava is generally a source of starch but the plant is also a good source of cyanogenetic glycosides. This implies, to those who believe that cancer can be prevented by cyanogenetic glycosides, that cassava can destroy cancer cells that are beginning to form in the body. This works by direct destruction of cancer cells through the action of an enzyme that are only present in cancer cells. Thus, normal cells are not affected or destroyed. There are many other vegetables, root crops and fruits that have this property, examples are: lima beans (patani), turnips (singkamas) and apricots. Nuts such as raw almonds have cyanogenetic glycosides. Have you tried raw almonds? It’s great, especially if add it on your morning cereals.
For arthritis, the herbal plant that can be taken would be “pansit-pansitan” [Peperomia pellucida, Linn.]. You can ask around and the herb is fairly common in the garden, just about anywhere. Boil a cup of clean bunch of plant (without the roots) in 3-4 cups of water and drink like tea (cup) 2-3x a day.
For pain one can consider luyang dilaw or turmeric as the anti-inflammatory plant for arthritis. You can boil luyang dilaw bought from the local market and take it like our “Salabat” but it can stain your teeth and mouth. The good news is that this is now conveniently available in powdered tea drink [Ampalaya Plus Delite Herbal Tea - containing Ampalaya, Banaba, Luyang Dilaw, Green Tea and Calamansi]. I would call it “Power Tea Drink.” My patients who have back and neck aches and even inflammatory joint pains have improved on this product. Take it 2x a day and see the results; then you can reduce to 1x a day as maintenance. I would not advice adding sugar if one could take it as plain tea. This is a marvelous drink and I take it myself. It gives me the perk after a day’s work. Try it! It is available in leading drug stores and convenience store. I prepare the cold drink by adding 1 sachete in 1 cup cold water, vigorously shaken in a bottle and taken as an afternoon or after dinner ”tonic drink.” If you want it sweet add wild honey.

thanks.

Dear Rick,                In the Philippines, a popular brand of Tongkat ali is Enduranz. You can probably ask your relatives here to get it for you. The nice thing about Enduranz is it has a gradual effect and has other useful herbs to help you achieve stamina.  -Doc Emil

I just wanna know if ampalaya has been proven to have an antiplatelet activity? since it is associated to lower blood cholesterol..and how about hypertension in connection to ampalaya?
September 16th, 2006 at 1:13 am
gud morning… i’m very happy to know about herbalblog..just want to ask for any herbal meds for back pains? & on a plant that would be good for the kidneys…thank you very much.
September 23rd, 2006 at 10:19 am
Charisse,
There are no reports on anti-platelet activity of ampalaya, but Luyang Dilaw has the property to reduce platelet aggregation and would be beneficial for people with heart ailment. As to the effects of ampalaya on hypertension, it would be indirect as a result of lowering of body fat (a reduction of blood vessel deposits from cholesterol).
September 23rd, 2006 at 10:25 am
Cheeryll,
For backpains, I would recommend that the postural manners of the individual should be examined first, noting any bad way of sitting. This could be related to work conditions. For the natural way of dealing with back pains using herbs, then Luyang Dilaw would be a good choice. For the kidneys, use Banaba infusion. If you want the synergy of the herbs, try Ampalaya Plus Delite Tea which has Luyang Dilaw and Banaba.
October 15th, 2006 at 9:40 am
aside from ampalay, can you please advise the other vegetables good for a diabetic person. also, if there is any herbal medicine or supplement which lower blood sugar.
thanks and more power,
aileen

Banaba, Luyang dilaw (turmeric), Malunggay, Duhat and Bignay are some of the more popular plants that can help lower blood sugar. If you are looking for a better combination, Ampalaya plus capsule, which is a combination of the bananba, luyang dilaw and ampalaya, is a good choice because of the synergistic effects of the plants when taken together. – Doc Emil

just want to know if there s a medicinal plant for dyspareunia?
———————–
There is no medicinal plant specific for dyspareunia. You can try acupuncture but you should also try to understand the source, which can range from psychological conditions to vaginal infections. Try to get help from a gynecologist first. – Doc Emil

Thank you so much for placing Herbalblog in the internet, you help a lot to the people around the world not only filipino to easy understand what is the importance of those herbals you placed in the site, i always read all the contents of all herbal you mentioned in the site, i have a problem on my nerves, i have intercostal neuralga for more than a year, im still looking for a herbal which can reduce the pain from the left side of my shoulder, under the axilla, it is having muscle spasm, beside the left breast and the lower left breast, it seem the abdomen or reebs, i went on therapy but it doest help me, i am continuing my stretching exercise which can help me to less pain and i take neurobion or neurontin vitamins to help also, I have seen turmeric on the site, i wish it will continue helping me to reduce the pain and inflammation, I have found turmeric gives so many benefits to the body, so i am using it adding to milk and green tea, i recommend this to all my friends specially to women having a problems in gynae, lungs, liver etc. Could you please advise me which herbal medicine can reduce or to cure my intercostal neuralgia. Thankyou somuch and more power to herbal blog.
Cristy Samson
———————
Intercostal neuralgia is usually a result of Herpes zoster infection. If you had this condition, it will eventually go away but you should have enough of Vit B complex, C and E. Pain can be controlled by analgesics, taking turmeric or luyang dilaw can help both inflammation and pain -take 1 cup of turmeric tea 3x a day. You can actually buy Vit B 1, 6, 12 in 1 tablet (just ask for B1,6,12 from the drug store) which is cheaper than other brands. I will put a section on Vitamin C in this blog since flu is up again. You can take as much as 1500mg of vit C to improve your immunity, but take also plenty of water, at least 2 liters a day. Vit B complex (B1,6,12) will rebuild your nerves and stretching will allow you regain your mobility -its for rehab purposes. Vit E is beneficial for nerves and blood vessels.

Good day. . . .What are those herbal plants that can cure Alopecia?
Hoping for your reply, thanks. . .
—————
There are several reasons for alopecia in women, but usually stress is a significant cause. Others would be due to scalp infection. I would suggest that you manage your stresses first and then improve on scalp nutrition which can be both topical and oral supplements. Vitamins E and B complex are good choices. You can also try to reduce your use of harsh shampoos and replace them with herbal shampoos with aloe vera. I must also advise you that there is an immune cause of alopecia which can only be diagnosed and managed by physicians. -Doc Emil

I need a powdered pansit pansitan, herbal preparation for our project thnx
————-
No commercal preparation of pansit pansitan is available. You can actually prepare the material. Air dry pansit pansitan after washing minus roots, chop and grind the plant using a blender fitted with the one used for nuts -this is an add on to most blenders. However you will not get a powder so you should continuously use the blender until you get the fine material as possible. Sieve the material after each blend to separate the coarse part -this is the part you put back to blend/grind. The sieved material can be finally grinded using a mortar and pestle (buy this from a lab supply such as Mercury drug or Rose pharmacy or similar stores). The key is thorough air drying, hang them to dry. -Doc Emil

You can take Ampalaya Plus and Enduranz at the same time. For information on these, meantime, please refer to the individual plants in this blog. There are no other components in Ampalaya Plus and Enduranz inside the capsule that are not plant origin. Ampalaya Plus contain Ampalaya fruit (without the seeds), Banaba and Luyang Dilaw; these are synergistic to optmize the food supplement, helpful in controlling blood sugar coupled with diet and exercise. Enduranz contain Tongkat Ali, Malunggay, Banaba and Gotu Kola, again, to optimize to enhance vitality and physical endurance aside from the effect of “unlocking” the testosterone that is bound with globulin in the blood. Note therefore that testosterone is present in the body but most is unused or unavailable, tongkat ali release the bound testosterone, making it useful, both for stamina, sexual experience and physical development of muscles. It can assist in those people involved in sports and body building.
We do not recommend diabetics to stop their medications, but rather improve their condition using Ampalaya Plus capsule food supplement. Diabetics should monitor their blood sugar levels in both fasting state and 2 hours after meals at least once a week during the initial take of Ampalaya Plus. Monitorig should be for about 3 months to determine if anti-diabetic medications can be reduced. Monitoring for HA1C or glycosilated hemoglobin, which is a marker of diabetic state should also be done 2x a year or at least yearly. Remember that weight control is a key factor in diabetes. Overweight individuals need to reduce weight through exercise and diet management for effective control of diabetes. There is no cure for diabetes but you can contol it in order to live a good quality of life.
If you are overseas, you can ask relatives or friends in the Philippines to send you Ampalaya Plus and Enduranz or visit their website at http://www.gonatural.com.ph for more information.
The website has a section with an inquiry form and will respond to you within 12 hours or should you wish to contact them directly, the email address is: sales@gonatural.com.ph

I want to know if ampalaya really has lots of iron. Bawal sa husband ko ang iron but he is diabetic. Can he take or eat amplaya?
————————-
It is probably the iron compounds found in mineral-vitamin preparations that your husband wants to avoid. Ampalaya is classified as food, even when put into a capsule, it is still food and will not be a problem. Just read the label for any other contents that is not plant origin and if you don’t know the plant that was added to the ampalaya, then avoid that food supplement until you have an idea what the purpose of the “unkown” plant is.Â

DO YOU HAVE ENDURANZ FOR WOMEN?
I’M DIABETIC AND HAVE (R) FROZEN SHOULDER SINCE LAST YEAR.
CAN AMPALAYA PLUS COULD HELP ME HOW, PLEASE EXPLAIN
———————————–
Gina,
Enduranz would be appropriate for men, although it has been used by women for other purposes such as stamina and medicinal properties for cancer because of its anti-oxidant property. Kacip fatima (Labisa pumilia) is the herbal plant for women for purposes of enhancing sex.
As to your frozen shoulder (or technically known as adhesive capsulitis), Ampalaya plus can help relieve the pain on the shoulder and allow some mobility. The conservative measure would be physical therapy or you can consult a chiropractor who can help you reduce the inflammation by manual maneuvers. Surgical method has been considered successful also especially for refractory (recurrent) cases of FSS (frozen shoulder syndrome), the procedure is called arthroscopic capsular release, which is to be done by an orthopedic surgeon.

can I eat ampalaya even if i have a small hemmoroids, they say that all bitter foods is bad for hemmoroids. It is my problem starting when i gave birth its appear but now it is only small and not infected I was worrying taht maybe some other times it become bigger.what medicinal plant can i use to prevent my hemmoroids not be infected and how i cure this.
—————–
From Doc Emil:
You can eat ampalaya and it may even improve your stools; which can be beneficial to your hemorrhoids. Only very spicy food is commonly avoided such as chili which may cause irritation of the hemorrhoids. Only surgery can cure hemorrhoids. Foods which can soften stools will be best. If the hemorrhoid is not bothersome (small and not irritated) you can take care of it without resorting to surgery. Consult your doctor for advice because it needs to be examined for proper managment.

Is a safe of eating an ampalaya daily?
Eating too much ampalaya can cause what?
answer please….
thanks…
————————
From Doc Emil:
Ampalaya in very large doses which may be above 500Â mg per kilo body weight may cause severe hypoglycemia. Our usual way of eating ampalaya is very much safe even if it eaten every day. In a study recently completed by Filipino researchers it is estimated that about 50 grams (dry weight) of ampalaya is necessary to equal the effect of a synthetic medication. So the problem of hypoglycemia will not occur with eating ampalaya but with improper use of the ampalaya medication (in capsule or tablet) in excess. Likewise, taking oral hypoglycemics or synthetic anti-diabetic medications in excess or with or without ampalaya medications and without doctor’s supervision is risky.
In a study of Dr. Quintos at the UP College of Medicine, ampalaya capsules (Ampalaya Plus) taken by normal individuals helps optimize glucose metabolism and does cause hypoglycemic episodes. This imply that ampalaya is a natural way of getting in control of glucose metabolism and may prevent the onset of diabetes if it becomes part of our diet or food supplementation.

what is the natural cure for anxiety.i always experience light headedness esp. in the morning and gas in my body i often times burp and pass air, what is this?
From Doc Emil:
Anxiety has a number of causes and mostly psychologically/personality related. Meditation and stress management would help. Natural remedies would be coriander and aromatherapy. Gas in your tummy is probably digestion problems and may also be due to dyspesia. Try taking yogurt or other products that would enhance the growth of good bacteria promoting probiotics in your intestines.
May 27th, 2007 at 12:48 am
Can Ampalaya be hepatotoxic in some instances?
———————
From Doc Emil: It is not clear if ampalaya is hepatotoxic or just an enzyme stimulant. The observation in animal studies indicates that the hepatic vessels dilate with increase in liver enzymes but not clear morphologic changes of the hepatic cells. In another observation, chemical induced liver injury in an animal model, like the classic carbon tetrachloride animal model, showed that extracts of ampalaya fruit actually protect the liver from injury. Generally, the dominant effect is that of a favourable hepatic cell stimulation which may account for its beneficial effect in carbohydrate metabolism.

i have researchd about colds and i learned that antibiotics are not prescribed for common colds so ampalaya cant be an antibiotics
i just dcided to research about penicillin and i can kill gram positive bacterias
i need infos if ampalaya juice can kill gram positive bacteria and why..tnx
——————————
From Doc Emil: Bitter gourd (Ampalaya) has been reported to have antibacterial properties but the active principle is yet to be isolated. It has also been reported to have antiviral properties and is thought to be related to an enzyme that can interfere with viral RNA. Folkloric information on ampalaya indicate that the juice can be used as antiseptic.

I like to know more about the antiseptic property of momrdica charantia on wounds. And who is the author.please automatically reply.
———————————–
From Doc Emil: The use of Mormodica charantia for wounds is a folkloric information from South America, no formal documentation or study has been made. It is reported because it became part of a traditional use, although less popular than its use as a traditional medication for blood sugar regulation.

pls help me!!! i have a project that is research in english about ampalaya. My question is how to make ampalaya juice. And my 2nd question is if i make ampalaya juice and i put sugar it is have a side effects. Pls answer my question!!!…c”,)
———————————–
From Doc Emil: Making ampalaya juice is simple if you have a juice extractor. If you don’t have a juice extractor, you can use a cheese cloth or “Katza” -this is the sack used to pack flour. Chop your ampalaya fruit and put it in the cloth and squeeze. You can blend the fruit with small amount of water and squeeze in the cheeze cloth. Adding sugar will not cause a chemical reaction with the juice. You can put any flavor you like.

Good evening Sir!
I would like to ask if you could possibly give me a particular medicine for the purpose of enhancing sex. If ENDURANZ is for men, what medicine can you suggest for women? I am married for almost 9 years and I am not satisfied with my sexual performance. I am working and quite stressed with it. I’ll be visiting my husband in Dubai this October and it would be a very big help if you can suggest a medicine that I can take to enhance my ’sexual performance’ concern.
Will be waiting for your response. Thank you very much and more power!
————————————————-
From Doc Emil: For women ginseng has always been recommended for vitality and sexual enhancement. There are many preparations such as vitamins which contain ginseng. One product called “Energel capsules” which is available from Mercury Drug store has one of the highest amount in preparation (150 mg ginseng extract) and would suffice. You can also try to visit GNC, Healthy Options or Health Express (in most shopping malls in Metro Manila and some provinces) and ask about ginseng in single preparations. Take also vitamin E 400 IU daily.

doc?
is it true that antidesma bunius commonly known as bugnay or bignay can help prevent diabetes?
what are the contents of its leaves that can lower the blood sugar level??
————————————————–
Bignay has been used traditionally for diabetes and overall health. It is the berry fruit that has the health value than other parts. There are no chemical analysis of bignay to show what components would be responsible for blood glucose lowering effect. -Doc Emil

doc emil i am jeff escurel fr. mcu… just want to ask to you, kung may disadvantage ba ang pag-intake regular ng ampalaya? it is for our thesis about ampalaya and sir give us naman ng recommendation thx doc ^_^ it is a big help for us…
-(mcu) escurel jeffrey
————————————————–
According to some folkloric information, the disadvantage of ampalaya is on eating seeds which may cause infertility. However, eating ampalaya on a regular basis will have more advantages than disavantages; ampalaya can improve blood sugar utilization and “metabolism”, in general. It has also been reported to improve immune system. -Doc Emil

As we have read the previous comments, you said that there are no chemical analysis of bignay to show what components would be responsible for blood glucose lowering effect. Because of that we’re intrigued to know more about it. Can you share to us evrything you know about bignay? Would you mind giving us some websites to know more about ths bignay, and its composistion..:) thanks…hoping for your immediate response

I have a friend who has high blood pressure. Is this okay to take this ampalaya plus. Thanks
———————————–
From Doc Emil: Ampalaya plus can help people with high blood pressure. It can lower cholesterol and improve glucose metabolism. It helps lower blood pressure from turmeric; also prevent blood clots which can lead to stroke…just like taking aspirin
February 20th, 2008 at 11:32 am
can you help us? were looking for procedures how to make a malungay tea?
———————————–
From Doc Emil: You can collect the malunggay leaves, clean it with water and air dry. This is already your tea leaves. Just put 1 tbsp leaves in a cup and pour boiling water and keep it covered for 5 minutes then drink it 3x a day for your daily supply of calcium, minerals; also helpful for diabetes and lactating mothers. Alternatively, you can boil 1 cup pack fresh leaves in 3 glasses water and keep it in a thermos bottle good for 1-2 days. I do not advise to keep the stock in thermos for more than 48 hours. Alternatively you can refrigerate and add flavors such as lemon or pineapple juice.Â

good day. i just wanna ask kng anong magandang gamot sa taong hypertensive and diabetic.
———————————–
From Doc Emil: Natural remedy for hypertension is turmeric or luyan dilaw tea daily. Also serpentina or Adrographis paniculata tea. These can also help in diabetes. Better still take the Ampalaya plus capsule which is a combination of ampalaya, banaba and luyang dilaw. Eat food with high fiber daily. Maintain a low salt diet. Implement an activity (work-out) that will increase physical movement to burn calories. Eat plenty of vegetables and refrain from meals rich in sugar or carbohydrates. I will post the serpentina plant/ tea  next week. Monitor blood pressure and blood glucose weekly.

May 7th, 2008 at 3:35 am
good day, I’m really confuse, Is it true that Bitter Melon can help treat or prevent malaria? And if that is true what are the properties of bitter melon that can help prevent or threat it.
———————————–
From Doc Emil: Bitter melon is not known to prevent malaria. Traditional medicine documentations show that Artimesia plants can be tried; in China the plant is Artimesia anua. Makahiya has also been reported, in folkloric literature on medicinal plants, to have some effect on malaria.
May 29th, 2008 at 7:07 am
Thank you very much for the answer doc! I’ve learned that ampalaya is bitter because of the substance called quinine and this substance is also use in antimalarial drugs. Can their be any possibilities that it can also treat malaria?

June 21st, 2008 at 6:07 pm
Good day Dr Emil,
my father is a diabetic and hypertensive and is fond of eating amplaya, which is good because i know it can lower his blood sugar and stabilize his blood pressure, however his blood sugar is still above normal. he is also taking medications apart from eating the amplaya.
A neighbor asked him that this plant called “serpentina” is also good in lowering his blood sugar. he told me it is more bitter than ampalaya, my father is chewing one leaf 2 times a day (enduring the bitterness it has, coz he wanted to be cured). can you provide us more information about this plant? can it really cure diabetes? what are the sickness that it can cure and what is the effect of having too much of this? i can find little article about this plant from the websites.
thanks =)

Dear Dr. Emil,
I am a diabetic person (type 2). Can you please provide me the diabetic book which was advertised in salamat doc program aired this morning? I would highly appreciate if you will send me a copy for free. Thank you and more power.
———————————–
From Doc Emil: Please check with the web site of the company: http://www.gonatural.com.ph on how you can get the free book on diabetes.
July 14th, 2008 at 3:43 am
Hi Doc!
I am 40 yrs old and I have gain a lot of pounds through the years. In 2005, I was diagnosed with Hypertension and type 2 diabetes. My doctor said the diabetes can still be prevented if I changed my lifestyle. Sad to say, as much as I wanted to slim down, my body keeps on getting larger and larger. I take up 5 mg of Norizec Glimepiride and 25 mg of Atenolol Therabloc daily for my maintenance. I am planning to take up either the Ampalaya Plus Capsule or Ampalaya Plus Delite Herbal Tea. Question: Will the Ampalaya extracts complement my daily medicine or will it cancel one another?
Thanks
———————————–
Once a diabetic, for life ang diabetes, what your doctor is referring is that complications can be prevented.
Kung gusto mong magpapayat, mag set ka ng weight reduction program: cut your usual consumption of carbohydrates and fats by 1/2 or 50%; do not fast -take small frequent meals; reduce or eliminate your intake of all possible extra sweets such as cake, ice cream and soft drinks. Check the website:Â http://www.gonatural.com.ph/ and look at the benefits of resveratrol (Slenda). Adopt a regular exercise. No amount of supplemental intake will work for weight reduction without proper diet and exercise.

please include copyright of your website. because i need your copyright for my project
July 18th, 2008 at 5:26 pm
Dear Doc EMIL,GOOD day i’m your abide air patient. my problem is that isuffer both my hands parang namamanhid palagi.a sypmtom of diabetic.? thanks and more power to your program
———————————–
From Doc Emil: Hindi lahat ng namamanhid ay dahil sa diabetes baka kailangan mo lang ng Vitamin B complex (Vit B1, 6, 12). Mabibili ito sa botica sabihin mo lang Vit B1, 6, 12. Take 1 tablet 2x a day for 3 months or more. Mas mabuti kung magpakonsulta ka sa doctor para ma examine ang iyong blood sugar kung meron ka ngang diabetes.
July 20th, 2008 at 1:32 am
Doc,
Thank you for your advise in the different ailments it helps a lot to us your subscriber. Pls give me an advise about my ailment, coz i feel that my stomach is always full of gas, how can i treat it, what should i do. Thanks and more power.
———————————-
From Doc Emil: You can try probiotics as a possible remedy. I would recommend the liquid drinks in the market and also yogurt. Take them before meals. If you can drink it in the morning take it between meals before taking snack. Lactobacilli must be taken before any meal so that the good bacteria can settle in the intestines. If you have a meal the lactobacilli will just go out with the food. Take also prebiotics which support the growth of good bacteria such as yacon, coconut sugar and sugar beets. These will improve your digestion and decrease the gas. Remember do not expect results in just a short time; usually a month or more and if you improve, you must keep it as part of your lifestyle. These are health habits that will maintain health.
Also take teas such as Ampalaya Plus Delite because turmeric and ampalaya will help reduce Helicobacter bacteria (the cause of peptic ulcer) in the stomach.

Hello From South Bend, IN (USA)
My wife is originally from the Manila area. She has been undergoing chemo for cancer for about 4 years now. She is also on 3 different blood pressure medicines. One of these (Spironolactone) causes her body to retain potassium. After taking some wheat grass juice her potassium reading went dangerously high.
I see in your materials that avocadoes have potasium listed. Can you give a more specific potasium content reading as she likes to eat them occationally?
I like your web site!
Thanks!

Dr. Aligui,
What will be the herbal medicine for pvera and epilepsy. I’m just curious because I have been watching “Salamat DoC” and there has been no discussion regarding these 2 medical condition.
Please e-mail me. Hope to hear from you.
Thank you very much.
FROM DR. ALIGUI
Polycythemia vera and epilepsy are difficult conditions to be addressed by herbal medicine. P. vera is a medical condition brought about by long exposure to high altitude which causes the blood to increase red blood cells because of reduced oxygen at high altitude. Epilepsy is a condition which can be due to a number of factors; two forms are petit mal and grand mal seizures. While these have different causes and manifestations, medicinal plants that can calm the nerves may help reduce the irritation in the brain. However, it will not be a cure but rather an addition to diet. Watch Salamat Dok this weekend regarding the use of basil leaves for relaxation which can be advised for people with epilepsy. Caution is given that this is not a sure way of dealing with epilepsy but can help calm the nerves. Please see the current posting on medicinal plant regarding the use of Basil leaves as relaxant.

do you know any herbal treatment for hepatitis B? i’ve read that Phyllantus niruri, is a potent medicinal herb for hepatitis B. According to numerous writings, this plant can also be found in the Philippines. Can you please comment on this? Is it (P Niruri)available now in our drugstores?
FROM DR. ALIGUI:
There is no treatment of Hepatitis B, although there have been instances wherein people with chronic hepatitis B have spontaneously had disappearance of serum hepatitis B surface antigen -which means an apparent cure. Most remedies for hepatitis B are found in the body as defense substances, like interferon. Supplements and medications for hepatitis B which are common are those which reduce liver inflammation; Example: silymarin. Phylantus niruri has been reported to act the same way. Prepared as tea, P. niruri is taken daily to help reduce liver inflammation and thus prevent any further deterioration of the liver. P. niruri is not available in the drug stores. You can find them growing sporadically in vacant lots amongst grass. This is locally known as sampa-sampalukan.
March 20th, 2009 at 12:49 pm
Is it true that Bitter Gourd is good for treating pimple?
FROM DR. ALIGUI:
Yes, bitter gourd can help because it is also a natural antibiotic but luyang dilaw or turmeric is more appropriate or a combination of these. Prepare turmeric as salabat or tea, taken daily. By the way, people who are taking the food supplement Ampalaya Plus have reported improvement of their pimples.
March 23rd, 2009 at 12:39 am
what is the disadvantage of bitter melon
FROM DR ALIGUI: Basically to improve glucose tolerance among healthy and diabetic persons. It is also an immune modulator, improving resistance to infection, especially viral infections. It is food and it a food that acts to help the body prevent both infectious and degenerative diseases -it is a nutraceutical.
March 27th, 2009 at 8:46 pm

Good day to you Doctor,
My father was diagnosed last month with Stage 4 Colon Cancer. He will be having his 1st chemotherapy on Saturday (April 25, 2009). I would like so much to know if there are any alternative medicine that can help in burning his cancer cells? cause i read some testimonials on the internet that when they did the alternative medicines, they were healed of cancer.. of course with prayers too. =) and if its possible to do it during the time he is doing his chemo? thanks so much doc.
please doc email me at mlouie_masigan@yahoo.com.ph
thanks and GOd bless you!
FROMDR EMIL: You can try chichirica or what is called Madagascar periwinkle tea, locally known as “atay biyaâ€. It is an ornamental plant so most commercial gardens will have it. To make a tea, use 2-3 leaves in a cup of boiling water, cover for 5 minutes and drink daily. It is bitter. I heard of a colon cancer case who said that the colon mass disappeared. He took it for several years and he was given only 6 months to live.
May 3rd, 2009 at 11:40 pm

FROM DR. EMIL: Have a medical check up just to make sure you do not have diabetes. Supplements containing Tongkat Ali (marketed as Enduranz) can help. You take 1 capsule 2x a day before meals. It may take 2-3 weeks before you can expect results. If it will work for you, you should take it as a daily supplement as long as you can because increase in age will likely result in reduction of testosterone. Kaya para sa patuloy na sustenahan ang testosterone, tuloy tuloy din ang supplementation ng Tongkat ali.
June 22nd, 2009 at 10:02 pm
hi doc,
im a female 21 yrs old and wants to increase my testosterone.. is it okay for a woman like me to take enduranz? or can you recommend some other medicine for me to increase testosterone..
thank you so much in advance..
good day..
From Dr. Emil: Women cannot increase testosterone by tongkat ali because what tongkat ali does is to let the body release the bound testosterone and only males have most of the testosterone.

hello and good morning, Dr. Emil. I just would like to know what are the herbal medicines to be taken to help remove gall stones? I have heard apple juice which is 5 glasses a day for 5 days and on the sixth day, the patient have to take one glass of it and one spoonful of ipsum salt with olive oil. But I find it hard to find the ipsum salt. Any other medicine please? I am in China now. Thanks and I will await your response.
From Dr. Aligui: A possible natural detox which can increase bile flow, and therefore can potentially expel gall stones, would be radish juice. Take the 30cc or 1 oz of juice every other day. If you want to maintain just good bile flow for good health, then just eat raw radish with your favorite garden salad of tomatoes and lettuce or even blanched camote tops

good morning po, meron po akong frozen muscle, nagstart po ito late last year, nung una parang wala lang kasi kayo ko ang sakit but then lately di ko na maigalaw ng maayos ang kamay ko so i went to the doctor and they said i got frozen muscle, hypertension and high sugar(minimal) sa blood ko, sana po matulungan nyo ko what to do and take, i got sisters sa pinas so i can easily as them to send me the meds you can suggest, 51 na po ako and i reside in hong kong
thanks po ng marami, hintayin ko na lang po reply ninyo
FROM DR. ALIGUI: Try turmeric. Being in hong kong you may want to get Ampalaya plus (which contains turmeric) from the Philippines, take this 3x a day. Later on the company making amplaya plus will market special teas which contain plain turmeric. Alternatively, in China there is herb preparation called Jianghuang (which I learned to be turmeric) which you might want to inquire in Chinese drugstores.

Hi Doc!
I like this blogs about herbal medicines a lot. Will you please tell me what herbal medecines/plants are good for Bartholins’ cyst?
Thanks po and I’m waiting for your speedy reply.
FROM SR ALIGUI:
There is no herbal medicine or plants that would be good for Bartholin’s Cyst. You just have to keep them from getting infected, in which case it becomes an abscess. Good personal hygiene is recommended.
October 12th, 2009 at 5:09 am
FROM DR ALIGUI:
Ang sobrang kain ng broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower ay di recomendado maari ito makapagpababa ng thyroid function at makadagdag sa pagbaba ng TSH. Hormone augmentation ang kailangan. Eat fruits and vegetables in moderation. Selenium form nuts would be a good supplement. Selenium helps raise TSH. Brazil nuts are good sources of selenium and also sea foods.

hi doc. nakita ko yung website ninyo. very informative. tanong ko lang doc kung pwede sa aking yung ampalaya juice while taking 1 tab fornidd 500mg after breakfast. my hgt is 253. blood pressure normal, creatinine normal. anemic. 53years old.
thank you doc for the advice you will send..God bless!
FROM DR ALIGUI:

A pleasant day sir.
I’m Francis A. Aguilar, a BS Biology student in UPLB. I’ve read the blogs about Antidesma bunius and its purported anti-diabetic property. I would just like to ask if you’ve heard of users of bignay bark for diabetes or of any literature listing the the bark’s traditional/meicinal use. I’m currently preparing for a study on the potential hypoglycemic properties of bignay bark extract and the information would be of great help. Again, a pleasant day to you sir.
From Dr. Aligui: Bignay has been reported to help lower blood glucose but there are no studies on it. I would recommend that you test it on animal models using standard methods such as using alloxan or streptozotocin to induce diabetes in mice and then test the extract of Antidesma.
November 9th, 2009 at 2:43 am
A pleasant day sir.

Hi doc,
Could you please advice about my problem on my caretaker kasi bawat mag-ubo siya magdura siya ng dugo but one time every morning its like plema my kasamang dugo. Nagpa-xray siya finding my small spot on the right of the lung. Nagpalordotic siya normal naman. Nagbigay siya ng sample ng plema niya invalid naman. Isa pa kasi lagi daw sumasakit sa buong likod niya at nasabi yong doctor madami daw plema sa likod niya so what is the best herbal medicine on this type of illness?
Thank you hope to hear from you soon! Could you please answer me to this email:ipiggoat@yahoo.com.sg
From Dr. Aligui: You cannot just give a herbal medicine especially the condition is persistent. There must be other workup that will determine why he is having blood with phlegm. Herbal medicine for cough will only help liquefy the phlegm –example: lagundi but it will not solve or cure the main medical problem. You have to communicate well with his attending doctor so proper care and work up can be done.

Dear Dr. Aligui,
I am diabetic and insulin dependent. I had triple heart bypass surgery last year. Nanood ako ng Salamat Dok sa TFC dito sa Virginia, USA. Mayroon kang binaggit tungkol sa detoxipication drink. You said celery, parsley mix with pineapple juice as a detox juice. Para sa katulad kong diabetic anong klaseng blended juice ang pwede kong blender na available dito sa Amerika. By the way , related kaba kay Arthur Aligui, my classmate from Calamba, Laguna. Taga Calamba rin ako. Please let me know what to do. you can email me at rl_509@yahoo.com Thank you and regards.
Ramon
From Dr. Aligui: Since you are in the US, try to get hawthorn berry which was reported to help in diabetes with good results. The detox celery, parsely & pineapple is not recommended for diabetics, you have to replace pineapple with cucumber. If you want to try bitter gourd for diabetes, you can make a juice out of it mixed with green apples, using an ordinary juice extractor. Take any of these regularly but be sure you refrain from too much sugar. I would recommend that you monitor you blood sugar weekly to check it your natural supplementation works. You cannot stop any medications even if natural could help you. Control your blood pressure by taking less of the processed foods. Omega 3 (fish oil) can help you with reduction of the bad cholesterol which is the likely cause of your atherosclerosis. Take care.

Take bioflavonoids from dark colored fruits and vegetables (black grapes, sugar beets, etc). Ang Slenda ay may bioflavonoid na rin. Pwede mong pagsabayin ang Slenda at Renalin.

Hello doc,
ahm… just wanna ask if ampalaya is good for the skin? and what could be the possible effects of it when you put it to your face?
coz we have investigatory project and we are planning to use amapalaya as our main ingredient in our facial wash.
Thanks.:)
God bless u doc!
From Dr. Aligui: Ampalaya juice on skin can be antiseptic and astringent. Just like a cleansing material for the skin. Most cosmetic products now have natural ingredients, so ampalaya is fine for the skin.

Doc i have a type 2 diabetes. what is the best vegetable and fruits to be taken raw if i want to start a full vegetarian diet
From Doc Emil: Fruits are usually eaten raw but with moderation since fruits contain sugar. All leafy green leafy vegetables can be eaten raw provided it is cleaned properly. Some can just be steamed such as camote tops, kangkong. Raw malunggay leaves are very difficult to eat and it is best extracted into vegetable juice. Cruciferous vegetableous can also be eaten raw such as broccoli, cabbage, but not brushel sprouts. Ampalaya can be eaten raw.

Hi doctor emil, i would like to ask if there is an herbal drug for water rentention? i can drink up to 3 liters per day but im not satisfied with my urination, i notice it only this year when i transferred to middle east for work. i also feel bloated after drinking water, does this has something to do with the Kind of water here? As we all know, water in the middle east are treated water only as they do not have water sources except the nearby sea. If I will drink distilled water, I’ve read before that distilled water removes also the nutrients in our body. Please advice if there is an herbal product for water retention.
Also, what is the best herbal product for colon cleansing? Is the colon cleanser (medicine sold in bottles) safe? Or it has side effects?
If I will try natural colon cleansing how many days it will take effect?
Thank you very much.
From Doc Emil: Mineral water is advisable than distilled water. Distilled water can cause you to loose minerals. I cannot say any recommendation for colon cleanse. I would say that eating food with high fiber can cleanse your colon; coulpled with taking lactobacilli or yogurt. Colon cleanse cannot be regarded as quick medical intervention, it works because it a health habit to prevent disease.
February 1st, 2010 at 8:36 am
may i ask also what are the chemical properties bugnay have to be a herbal medicine for diabetic?plz

my father slices up some ampalaya, adds water and boils it then lets me drink the water, he says it will help reduce my acne. is it true? i have severe acne on the face. if not, what herbal/natural remedy can i use to help reduce my acne? thanks, doc! i’m so grateful to you and your very informative website.
From Doc Emil: Yes it could but not all the time, you have to see if it is working for you. Turmeric or luyang dilaw is also good for acne. You can use it just like preparing salabat. 1 cup of turmeric “salabat” 2x daily is the usual food supplement.
February 5th, 2010 at 2:28 pm

Doc maraming salamat sa inyong tugon sa nauna kong katanungan. Ang aking susunod na tanong: – Nakakasira po ba ng liver ang madalas na pag-inom ng ampalaya juice?
From Dr. Aligui: No, information on ampalaya indicates that it helps the liver digest food better, either to metabolize sugar better and to lower cholesterol. This is even good for fatty liver.
March 29th, 2010 at 10:36 am
Hi,
I have taken 2/3 cup bitter guard daily for my controlling blood sugar.can you tell me .is there any side effect such as impotence, heart prob, kidney failure

Dear Dr. Aligui,
I was a type 2 diabetic for over a year now. I found out that I was 7 weeks pregnant. I used to take a lot of medicines since I have other health problems too. My doctor ask me stop taking some of my meds. except for my diabetic. I found this bitter gourd tea on the market. I would like to know if it safe for me to drink and not harm the baby and how many times can I drink the tea, the box said its all 100% natural.
Please respond ASAP.. Thank you Doc
Respectfully,
Lina
From Dr. Aligui: Ampalaya is ok but for food supplements, make sure that the product will not contain ampalaya seeds. If you choose to take food supplements, Ampalaya Plus is ok.
April 23rd, 2010 at 4:44 am
Dear Dr. Aligui,
I have recently had an FBS test and the results are the following:
HBA1C = 10.7% 6.6-8.6% (normal)
FBS = 130 mq/dL 70-105
LDL = 206 mq/dL <200mq/dL
Alarming na po ba ang figures na ito or do? Ok po bang mag Ampalaya Plus ako or need to see a doctor for medications?
Thanks in advance.

Doc,
My mom started taking ampalaya plus. wala po bang complication if she is taking medication for her high blood pressure? Medyo elevated din po ang sugar level nya.
Thsnk you po!

None. Ampalaya Plus supplements the anti-diabetic medication. All 3 components are essentially food. Banaba as tea has been around for a long time (more than 100 years)

hi doc emil,
i just would like to ask if it is possible to make our thesis entitled perception of diabetic clients about the importance of herbal supplements (ampalaya) in controlling type 2 diabetes mellitus.is there any suggestions that will make our thesis better?
thank u very much..
sincerely,
deedee
————-
From Doc Emil: If you are doing a thesis for a BS course, this is ok but if this would be for a master’s thesis, it might not be acceptable. You have to deal with the health seeking behavior of patients, their actual intake of food supplements and the blood sugar levels; thus it would be cross-sectional study: The relationship of food supplement intake and control of DM Type 2. The perception would be written as part of the cross-sectional survey.
July 20th, 2010 at 8:46 am
Dok, Marami pong salamat sa inyong sagot sa nauna kong katanungan. Ngayon po nais ko po sanang malaman kung anong mabisang halamang gamot na makakalunas sa aking sobrang pagpapawis ng katawan. Sana po ay matugunan ninyo kaagad dahil hirap na hirap na po ako lalo na sobrang humid o napakainit dito sa Qatar ngayon at hindi mawala wala ang aking ubo at sipon dahil palagi po akong natutuyuan ng pawis. please help me i have had a case of kidney infection from bacteria and i would like to start using the Bitter lemo as a preventive measure. Is that ok ?
thanks for the many solutions you have given the people. KEEP IT UP
—————
Yes that’s ok since bitter melon has anti-bacterial properties, but you also have to try cranberry juice. If you take adequate amounts of water, it is already a preventive measure against urinary tract infection.

There is no proof that bitter gourd can cause harm, in fact it is a very good food with a lot of history in Asia and South America that has provided ethnographic evidence of medicinal use. If you will look at the ethnic vegetable of Okinawans which is Goya or bitter gourd and turmeric as everyday tea, the correlation is that these vegetables have been given credit for the longevity that Okinawans have, of course, there is also the low calorie diet which has been a traditional diet due to high intake of vegetables. Okinawans have an average life span of 85 yrs. Studies on bitter gourd on the liver suggest that there is a protective effect. You can also benefit from drinking pomegranate juice due to high concentration of resveratrol, as well as dard berries such as blue berries. These fruits and vegetables are high in anti-oxidants and phyto-insulins that can help lower your blood sugar, promote blood vessel health and lower cholestrol. Lowering of cholesterol and increasing immune defenses are believed to be the other benefits of bitter gourd. Since you are already diabetic, you must regulate your intake of carbohydrates such as rice, sweets and fat. Taking bitter gourd juice daily of about 30-50cc daily is healthy, do this daily and you can also add turmeric to the juice. If you can drink this without adding other flavors, it would be fine. If you want to improve the taste, add green apples prepared with a juice extractor including the peels.

Great site. Wondering if you have any ideas of natural herbs for essential thrombocytosis ie herbs to lower a very high platelet count which are proven safe. Not sure what you mean by Ampalaya reducing platelet function, does this mean it will bring down the platelet count?.Are there any studies on this if so could you direct me to the source. Thanks you and best wishes.

doc ask ko lang po kung paano mo makakatulong ang ampalaya treatment for parasitic worms sa katawan in both childen and adult? alin part ng ampalaya yun gagamitin at kung may iba pang ilalagay thanks!
———-
for parasitic infections makakatulong ang langka at pineapple. makakatulong din ang ipil-ipil (5-10 young seeds eaten directly). I would prefer langka and pineapple. The part of ampalaya used are the leaves, no formal dose is available, you can try it as leaf juice extract.
December 29th, 2010 at 7:06 am

Sir,
what will happen if I eat and put too much sugar on ampalaya ? Mawawalan po ba ng bisa sa katawan ng tao yun?
—No, meron ngang pickled ampalaya at may bisa pa rin yon. mas ok ang ampalaya juice with green apples if you can’t tolerate the bitterness of ampalaya
March 8th, 2011 at 8:48 am
Is ampalaya leaf extract safe for 5-month old babies?
—There is no reason for you to give ampalaya extract to babies. The folkloric reason for giving ampalya extract, according to tradition was to remove the green colored stools. These stools are normal and will be eliminated by the baby with or without ampalaya extract. Better to give breast milk to increase immune defense of the baby.

Hi Doc.
My son is 10 years old. Is it ok for him to take ampalaya plus 3x a day?
Since our family has a history regarding type II diabetes and I ‘heard’ that there are a lot of children all over the world that are now being diagnosed as diabetics. His blood sugar is normal but I just want to make sure that it stays that way, and since ampalaya plus capsules are just vegetables in capsules and not a medicine, so, does it mean it’s OK? I just want to confirm po. Thanks in advance

Greetings doc! I just wanted to ask if there is any possibility for a lung scar to heal. I just had my x-ray and was found to have scar in my lungs. I submitted myself for sputum exams but the result is negative. I remember I had a bad case of pneumonia during my teens.

HEllo..Happy New Year!!! I would like to know if it is advisable for someone who is currently taking blood thinning medicines to eat raw ampalaya every meal. This person is diabetic that is why he needs to lower his blood sugar and he also has a heart ailment. Thank you.
