Pancit pancitan or silver bush has historical roots in South America and Asian countries. We often see this plant in our garden and grows without maintenance. It is so common that we do not even have to do propagate it because it propagates itself. What we commonly know is its use for arthritis and an essential component of the “pito-pito†recipe. The usual preparation is a tea or drink made by a decoction of the succulent parts and leaves. However, we recommend its use as salad or eaten raw, mixed with tomatoes and onions for a daily dose to alleviate pain and swelling from arthritis. It contains essential oils and phytosterols. It can be used as topical but not for arthitis.

Topical use of pancit pancitan is best applied for skin infections such as boils and abscesses. It can induce diuresis when taken internally. Clinical studies on Peperomia pellucida showed the plant extract is not as effective compared with indomethacid to reduce pain but is more potent as anti-inflammatory agent, apparently interfering with prostaglandin synthesis. Prostaglandins are inflammatory mediators. If you gather pancit pancitan, make sure you wash the plant very well before eating it raw. The young stems can also be eaten raw.

Good Morning. i would just like to know if this pancit-pancitan is also a remedy for nerve aches. my mother is suffering from nerve aches on her jaw. it pains me to see her like that. no specific medicine of surgical procodure is said to cure the aching. it started when she had her jacket fixed form her dentist. some drs said, it damaged the nerves near the jaw. drs prescribed antibiotics and it helped, but it still returns. afraid that the antibiotic will damager her liver or kidney, we are trying to find alternative meds to ease the pain at least. thank you so very much. any reply will be greatly appreciated.
FROM DR. EMIL: Turmeric or luyang dilaw may help relieve the pain. As for the nerve damage, ask her to take a combination of Vitamin C (500 mg) and B-complex (Vit B1, B6 and B12), taken daily for at least 3 months. I think the nerve problem will not go away until the tooth problem is fixed. I would advise you to consult another dentist and see if it can still be fixed.

Thank you and more power
FROM DR. EMIL: Yes, Ampalaya Plus, which contains ampalaya, bananba and luyang dilaw, can help maintain health; healthy blood glucose, cholesterol, digestion, and even arthritis. Luyang dilaw is recommend for cancer, arthritis and allergies. Better to take these as preventive measure against diseases and build body resistance.

From Dr. Aligui: Baka kailangan mo ay Vit B-Complex (Vit B1, B6, B12). Nabibili ito sa mga drug stores tulad ng Mercury drug, Rose Pharmacy or South Star drug. Take 1 tablet 3x a day for 1 month and then reduce to 1 tablet 2x a day. Sabayan mo ng luyang dilaw tea or salabat araw araw ( 1 cup daily).

can pancit pancitan cause hyperkalemia when taken in excessive amounts?how?
FROM DR. ALIGUI: In excessive amounts, yes, but how much is too much is something that is relative to other sources of potassium. 100 grams of edible P. pellucida will give approx 277 mg of potassium, which slightly higher in Brassia oleracea (broccoli) 249 mg/100 gms of edible portions. Basically, a normal functioning kidney will always eliminate excess of electrolytes and other metabolites. As a benchmark edible fruit, banana contain 401mg/100 grams of potassium and even if we eat 4-5 bananas daily, we do not experience potassium overload, unless perhaps, a person is also taking potassium supplementation in form of prescription drug.
