The parts of the plant that can be eaten as vegetable are the flowers, leaves and pods. It is a significant source of calcium, iron, phosphorus and vitamins A, B and C. It has also been reported to be beneficial in diabetes because it can lower blood glucose. This “wonder vegetable” can be mixed with a variety of food like tinola, fish with coconut milk, corn soup. For daily medicinal use, just prepare malunggay tea which is about 1 cup leaves boiled in 1 and 1/2 glass of water. Drink this daily. You can improve the taste by adding lemon grass (tanglad) or pandan leaves. A single preparation can be stored up to 2 days in a thermos bottle, however, a fresh preparation is always recommended.

    Dear Doc.

This is the first time i open your e-mail address. I don’t know how to go to your question and answer portion. I just heard it on a radio station with Manang Rose just tonight and i,m very eager to ask you some few question about ENDURANCE FOR MEN which is a food supplement. Here is my question.
Doctor for almost two years now i’m having trouble with my erection of my organ i’m almost embarassed to make sex with my wife because of this problem. And recently when i go to our C.R. i masturbate and i notice that the juice coming out of my organ is very few and very week it touches the head of my organ ( hindi na ho pumupudlit katulad ng dati na lumalabas siya ng malakas at talaga naman nakakarmdam ako ng excitement. Ngayon ho ay sa hanggang ulo nalang ng aking Organ at nawala na yung kiliti at excitement sa aing pakiramdam). Is there something wrong and i want to talk to you personally about this matter. Will endurance for men capsule help me with my problem? Please help me.

    ———————————–

  • Ellis Henson Says:

Hello to all the Amazing Malunggay or Moringa fans out there.

Just for your information. The Nutrients in these amazing leaves do not dissapear when the leaves dry out. This is one outstanding character of Malunggay but I think the Vitamin C will be lost though. But the other essential nutrients such as the protein calcium, vitamin A iron posphorous, beta carotene and potassium will remain in the leaves. Amazing! Isn’t it. Man! Talk about nature’s food supplement.
For the health buffs out there the easiest way to make moringa tea is to boil the freshly picked moringa leaves and boil them in clean water in a teapot and Voila! Instant Moringa Tea with a nice cool greenish color. But a word of caution. Moringa leaves have that distinctive character of leaving an irritating sensation to the throat very similar to the irritating effect of drinking fresh ginger tea or worse eating a slice of fresh ginger.
What causes the irritation you might ask? Well, I don’t know. Maybe it’s the combined vitamins and minerals they contain or Nature’s way of telling To Taste the Sweet You Must Taste the Pain. An irritated throat isn’t that painful and it’s a small price to pay inorder to reap the benefits of natural nutrients.
So another advice, flavor your Malungay Tea with fresh lemon , mandarin orange, the Calamansi lemon or any citrus fruit that will suit your taste. And for sweeteners, Well you decide. Simple sugar, honey, muscovado, and for those weight watchers out there, Low Calorie Sweeteners. I won’t mention any brands. That’s advertising. There are a lot of them in the market.
So there you have it! You’re very own Moringa or Malungay Tea which you made all by yourself. If you have some left overs in your teapot, let it cool in room temp and store them in the fridge so you can have Malungay Ice Tea Later! Enjoy!
Well I still am not sure but I think boiling the leaves can make some of the nutrients of the moringa to breakdown and be lost in the process. So don’t boil your leaves for too long.
To get more infos you can always look them up on the internet. There are lots of articles written by health professionals and researchers around the world.

So If you’ll excuse me. I have some Malungay Tea to brew and some Malungay salad to Toss and my Mom asked me to pick fresh malungay leaves to be cooked with coconut milk for dinner. Coconut and moringa .hmmm, sounds interesting. Malungay! Really Amazing.

how can we use the herbal clearly?

    ———————————–

From Doc Emil: Use it as food, eat it more often. There has been no clinical trial on Moringa and we rely on ethnographic information. Although some have used it for cancer we do not know exactly how it works even for breast milk production. The Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Dept of Science and Technology is doing work on the analysis of Moringa but we have incomplete data on it. For now it is considered a functional food for health maintenance because of its nutritional value and the observation in some studies in India that it can lower blood sugar (can be of help in cases of diabetes).

hi. im a part of a research team here in feu medicine who wants to do a study about the cytotoxic effect of malunggay against BRCA1. i haven’t found a link as to what active component of malunggay that makes the apoptosis possible. do you have any idea? thanks

    ———————————–

From Doc Emil: Assuming you are successful in an in-vitro testing of the crude malunggay extract, you may proceed with molecular seiving of the extract to separate the contents and characterize the materials. In consultation with a biochemist limit your possible candidates to a few for repeat testing. This is quite labor intensive and easily said than done. The implications of basic studies on apoptosis and its extrapolation to clinical applications do not always correlate. Read this article from Nature Biotechnology: http://www.nature.com/drugdisc/news/articles/nbt0405-409.html and see for yourself the extent of work needed. If you need guidance I would recommend that you talk to Dr. Romy De Villa. I was a former Executive Director of PCHRD-DOST and had been involved with the monitoring of the breast cancer research group where Dr. De Villa was a member.

I would also advise you that the thinking in medicinal plant research done by the NIRPROMP (UP Col of Medicine) and shared by others is that the complete plant components need to be present for an effect to happen. The lesson from Lagundi tells us that while the whole plant material gave favorable clinical effects, none of the components tested parallel the results of the complete plant extract. Further lesson from this is that nature provides the best combination for healing. The wisdom to distinquish how and when to separate or isolate the molecules for drug discovery is difficult to acquire.

  • Doc Emil Says:

Clarification and issues on the use of herbal medicine:

    1. The formal investigation on the active principle(s) of medicinal plants has not been extensively done due to high cost of doing basic studies and so far only the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD) of the Dept of Science and Technology and the Philippine Institute for Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITAC) of the Dept of Health fund most of the research.
    2. We (Phils) do not have good updated information on the extensive chemical analysis of medicinal plants and we rely mostly on information from institutions abroad. The extensive documentation was originally provided by the book of Quisumbing -”Medicinal Plants of the Philippines” which is the major reference but it is too old and relied on ethnographic and crude biochemical analysis. It is up to the universities and research institutions to assume an active role in medicinal plant research and share their findings to the public.
    3. Medicinal plants help us mostly for preventive medicine and we are not really sure about the outcomes for the cure of diseases in large population samples. Again, report from institutions abroad help us improve our understanding of the value of medicinal plants.
    4. Not all medicinal plants are safe to use and again we have to be guided by reports of poisoning or adverse events from medical literature.
    5. What Europe considers safe to use (but not necessarily highly effective) is the folkloric use spanning 10 years; a plant which is in use for 10 years or more without reports of toxic effects can be considered safe. Before effectiveness can be addressed, safety must be assured -this is the dictum in clinical trials.
    6. Medicinal plants (fruits and vegetables included, categorized as Functional Food) have value in either reducing our risk for disease or reducing our dependency to prescribed drugs. We can in a way claim cure only in the context of a clinical trial (a strict requirement) but it does not mean that having the label: “NO APPROVED THERAPEUTIC CLAIMS” means no effect. Medicinal plants have health value -the historical nature of drugs is that the early medicines came from plants so keep an open mind that nature provides health remedies.
    7. We will update people as we obtain information from the researchers who publish their work on medicinal plants.

    -Doc Emil

    hallu good day……….

I just want to ask about malungay tea, can you give me what are those benefits in using malungay tea?

I hope you can give me some information for the compilation of my study about tea….

    ****************************

There are no studies on malunggay tea; no available information on the chemical analysis of malunggay tea. You can check the FNRI website (http://www.fnri.dost.gov.ph) for nutritional analysis of malunggay as a vegetable. I think DOST is working more on the analysis of malunggay. The analysis is a key factor in infering the benefits of any vegetable or plant for medicine and food but I caution you that how it is prepared will matter as to the loss or decrease in the amount depending on the way it is prepared. Tea preparation from dried leaves is generally good extraction.

For all of you to be satisfied with ur queries about Moringa Oleifera (Malunggay), I suggest that you surf the internet, it has a vast information, articles, clinical studies & health facts made by diff. int’l laboratories, organizations, institutions, etc.. Im sure ul not only be satisfied but wud be amazed! Moringa wudnt be referred to as Miracle Tree, Never-die Tree, Mother’s Best Friend, etc… for nothing. Its powerpacked with nutrients dats why its heralded as the Most Nutrient-Rich Plant on the planet among 500,000 species of plants (trees, vegetables, fruits, herbs) studied. And NATURAL NUTRIENTS is just what our body needs to stay healthy. If you’re sick or u have disease, the natural nutrition (vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, anti-inflammatory & antioxidant compounds, etc..) of moringa wud play a big role in making ur body cells & tissues fights disease/s. Drugs depletes nutrition, hence, u shud supplement ur drug with natural nutrition. When taking drugs prescribed by doctor, u consult the internet for its adverse reactions and side effects. We only have one life. So give ur body the care that it needs. Our body is made to distinguish between natural and chemical (synthetic). And u know the difference.

Our body is designed to naturally heal itself with proper nutrition. Drugs only mask the symptoms, natural nutrition works on the root cause of the disease, hence taking supplement without seeing/feeling immediate healing effect does not necessarily mean dat it can’t cure. Just continue. i have read many articles, clinical studies of moringa in the internet and i havent read any adverse effects it has in our body. Its even safe for babies and pregnant/lactation moms, dats y its called Mother’s Best Friend. World Health Org has been using it to combat malnutrition among children in Africa. & they have also found it as a cure to treat an onset of HIV disease.

The dried, powdered leaves of Moringa/Malunggay is almost 10x more potent than the fresh leaves. Y? To make one kilo of powdered malunggay, u nid 10 kilos of fresh leaves, hence the nutrients increases & more compact, and most of its nutrients has been preserved. Cooking destroys most of our foods’ nutrients. I have read this on the internet – “Man is the only member in the animal kingdom that destroys its food before eating.” Dats true enuff! Beast/animals are strong because they eat their foods fresh from the plants, grass on the ground. The ground has lots of minerals.

One of the many healing properties of moringa: it detoxifies due to its high chlorophyll content. it flushes off toxins from our body like cholesterol, excess sugar/glucose in the blood, which is the culprit of many diseases.

Its only natural nutrition dat can make u healthy along with exercise, proper hygiene, plenty of water & enuf rest. Great day!

    About Body pH

The body was designed to be alkaline but has become acidic through function. When the pH of the body’s internal biochemical environment is equal to 7.39 (slightly alkaline), it functions at its best. The pH of blood has a range that is very small; it ranges from a slightly more acidic reading of 7.36 to a reading of 7.42 which a little more alkaline. Anything higher or lower than these figures can indicate whether a body is acidic (7 to 7.35) or alkaline (7.42 to 7.8). If body pH does not stay within these limits, it will no longer be able to function, and the result would be death.

Optimally, the blood should be within the pH range of 7.36 to 7.42, otherwise the body is in either acidosis or alkalosis and illness will occur. Acidosis is much more common than alkalosis; more than half the population of the world is afflicted with this condition.

The pH range of the body’s tissues and organic fluids varies. While the optimal pH of the body is 7.39, this pH reading refers primarily to the blood and not as much to the body’s internal environment (ie. fluid within or surrounding cells). The blood must maintain its narrow pH range in order to sustain life. The body corrects the slightest change of blood pH and restores it to the optimal 7.39. When this task can no longer be performed , physical and mental disorders begin to appear.

The internal environment of the body can withstand more significant pH changes than the blood can. However, the internal environment should never exceed the 7.36 or 7.42 ranges if good health is to be realized.

Many organs or organic fluids have a pH that is either far above or below the optimal pH of 7.39. For example, urine pH may be 6; it can even go as low as 4.5. This is possible because urine is eliminated on a regular basis and does not remain in the body for long amount of time.

Some areas of the body that are essentially acid include:
The colon at a pH of 6.8
The outer layers of the skin at a pH range of 5.2
The gastric region at a pH of 2

Other areas that are more alkaline include:
The inner layers of the skin at a pH range of 7.35
The pancreatic juices at a pH of 7.5 to 8.8
The small intestine at pH range of 8

The different pH values are normal for that area and correspond to the exact needs of the body. An example of this is the extreme acidity in the gastric region, which is necessary to digest proteins. Another example is the high acidity of the skin which helps to kill microbes before they are able to enter the body.

Restoring the acid-alkaline balance does not mean raising the pH of the gastric region from 2 to 7 (doing this would cause major digestive problems), but instead restoring the pH of the basic internal environment. It is the acidification of the internal environment that is responsible for the all of the health problems caused by acidity.

Moringa is alkaline. its chlorophyll content helps in restoring and maintaing our blood’s ideal pH by cleansing the blood of toxins. No disease can thrive/live in an alkaline environment of the body. Maintain ur body’s proper pH with Moringa, along with other fruits and veggies. Alkalinize water will be of great help too! Live long and healthy! Start a healthy lifestyle now!…

“For the health buffs out there the easiest way to make moringa tea is to boil the freshly picked moringa leaves and boil them in clean water in a teapot and Voila! Instant Moringa Tea with a nice cool greenish color” It is not advisable to boil malunggay fresh leaves because all the vitamins and minerals will evaporate. The best way is to eat it raw or process the leaves without the use of direct heating. Thanks.

  • Tyler Says:

Would an alcoholic extract of moringa oleifera be more effective than whole or powdered leaves?

  • Doc Emil Says:

IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO USE WHOLE PLANT AND NOT EXTRACTS. EXTRACTS ARE BETTER USED FOR RESEARCH PURPOSES WHEN FRACTIONAL COMPONENTS ARE BEING STUDIED

  • Tyler Says:

Thank you. I am aware that the whole plant is usually better to use for medicine/food sources/etc. However I would be preparing the tincture myself with whole leaves (not isolated components). I was thinking that might be more powerful and useful than a tea or something of that sort. Consuming the whole leaf would probably be good too, although I’m not sure it would be as effective due to the plant fiber.

  • cristy Says:

    hi doc!

i am a student po who needs a science investigatory project..
please help me how to choose a good investigatory project..
    thank you!

FROM DOC EMIL:Investigatory projects are best handle by an adviser such as your science teacher. Choose a topic that you are interested to know. Reading a lot will be the key in knowing what to investigate. I know it is quite hard to start but your interest is the best guide plus your exposure to science literature.

  • Noel Jun L. Linganay Says:

Doc, can you help us about our Investigatory Project about “Curing/Treating Asthma with Moringa Oleifera.”

Can you help us about this???

FROM DOC EMIL: It is difficult to do this since your test population cannot be animals but humans. If animals are used, an asthma animal model must be developed. This is a technically difficult problem because the development of asthma animal models is still debatable.

From Dr. Emil: For fatty liver, take luyang dilaw salabat. Luyang dilaw salabat taken 1 cup daily. One inch of luyang dilaw sliced or crushed and boiled in 1and 1/2 glass of water for about 5 minutes . You can keep this for two days in the refrigerator. Another 1 is sinta or serpentina 3 leaves in 1 cup boiling water, leave for about 5 minutes and taken daily. This is a very bitter tea but it works like Silymarin.

Doc, gud AM. Is there substance of malunggay that can enhance sleeping problem or insomnia? pls answer… or you may text me 09197375313, how can i order your malunggay tea?

    FROM DR ALIGUI:
None. Insomnia may have many causes but generally if you want to improve sleep, melatonin for 1-2 weeks may help. A natural tea from the passion flower can help also. Take these at night after supper to help you sleep. You should also consult a doctor who should do a medical examination to determine if your insomnia has an identifiable cause.

  • tabby Says:

    Hi Doc,
I had breast cancer treatment (chemotherapy- 6 session, radiation- 30 days)ended May 2009).And I got my blood test last August 2009 the Doctor told me the result is perfect, no problem now. I really don’t know for how long i will suffer for muscle pain. I want to use herbal medicine only and also I did not take any pills like tamoxifen for my hormone therapy. Please Doctor if you can give me advice. Thank you so much…

  • hazra Says:

so do you mean malunggay is an herbal plants……..:)

From Dr. Aligui: Malunggay is a medicinal food; a vegetable. A herbal plant, by culinary definition, is a plant used for seasoning; example: basil, rosemary, thyme, etc. A food that is acts like a medicine when taken more than usual is called a nutraceutical. A herbal medicine or drug is a plant, whether vegetable or herb, that is prepared from whole plant material and made into tablet, capsule or suspension.

  • shari Says:

hello doc, so the moringa oleifera will help to reduce the possibility of infection..my IP is about moringa oleifera as ointment..can you teach me how to make an ointment out of malunggay?

    more power doc!

From Doc Emil: For making an ointment of malunggay you will need to ask a pharmacist. I am not in authority to advise you on this because I have not actually tried it. What I could say is that maybe you can learn from this website: http://www.pindariherbfarm.com/educate/makeoint.htm

  • arianne esteban Says:

    pleasant day doc !

    what’s the procedure for
    making malunggay as water
    purifier ?
    pls help us with our
    project..:]

From Doc Emil: Malunggay as water purifier makes use of the grounded seeds as floculant. This material when mixed with “dirty” water is supposed to act as a precipitating agent to adsorb contaminants, including some bacteria/parasites. The particles of the seeds, with adhered contaminants, still has to undergo settling. No clear studies have been done to test the potability of the water with different contamination states. So the bottom line is that the use of malunggay as water purifier is only part of the purificaition process but not a “quick fix” by itself.

should it be best to take malunggay leaves raw or boiled?

i would be grateful to hear from you. your words would be of much help. Godbless!

From Doc Emil: No studies have been done on malunggay as cleansing agent; reported use as flocculant in water purification.

    feb.7, 2009

hi good day , well i just read about your article and i was amazed because i did’nt realize that malunggay can be now use as one of the ingredients in making many kinds of product but i have one thing to asked , is there any disadvantage in eating lots of malunggay?
cauz i just make my research paper about malunggay and that is the only one question that i can’t answer, i hope you canreply this question sooner or later….

From Doc Emil: The toxic effects of eating a large volume of malunggay has not been established. A study is currently being conducted by the Food and Nutrition Research Institute in collaboration with researchers from UP Diliman and UP Manila. We hope we will know it when it is done. For the time being we assume that the normal consumption of malunggay as a vegetable using the food pyramid or a healthy serving size of vegetable which is 2/3 of the total food intake per meal is recommended.

  • Dante Says:

Hi Doc. A friend of mine invited me in a health symposium about a certain juice drink that can help people with their sickness. they claim that it has malunggay extract. there are many testimonials that it really works. i’m a bit hesitant about it so i tried researching about that particular product and also the benefits of malunggay. i stumbled upon this article: http://www.firstvitaplusonline.com/2009/12/malunggay/ but it’s just copied from wikipedia. i’m well aware of the health benefits of malunggay but if it’s infused in some sort of powdered juice drink, will the power of malunggay still be there?

From Dr. Aligui: We don’t have any information on how much malunggay components are retained when it is processed. Most of what would be recommended is to take whole plant extract or parts of the plants such as powered leaves.

Malunggay has plenty of nutrients so pwedeng apply yan sa skin. For anti-aging, I would recommend eating plenty of vegetables and fruits. Resveratrol has been shown to be a promising anti-aging bioactive substance.

Why not, we know that the skin, including the hair are benefited by anti-oxidants when applied on scalp so go ahead. There are no documentations for this but it makes sense to apply it on the scalp because malunggay has plenty of nutrients.
