Excellent source of antioxidants; good source of vitamins A, B, and C, calcium and iron; also a good source of roughage. In preparing these, just sautee lightly in oil with garlic and onions. You can combine this with other vegetables such as okra for a healthy meal.

Please e-mail me what is the herbal medicine in curing thyroid.
Thank you
———————————–
From Doc Emil: There are many conditions which can affect the thyroid, bringing about either hyper or hypothyroidism. Endemic goiter (caused by iodine deficiency) has been known to be alleviated using iodine supplements or iodine fortified food or iodine rich food such sea food and malunggay. Caution in eating soy food -high in isoflavones (such as in soy and soy products) may result in a higher thyroid stimulating hormone and can be a problem among patients with hyperthyoroidism. Goitrogenic foods act like antithyroid drugs in disabling the thyroid, and causing hypothyroidism -these are mosty the cabbage family, turnips, radish, cauliflower, broccoli -especially when eaten raw.

Gud Pm Doc,
Good day,
Is there such a herbal medicine that can improve memory of kids?
Also, what is the best fruits can be eaten to lower my cholesterol , Im 36 years old po.
Hope i can get answer to my e-mail add, that I provide.
Thank you and more power.
———————————-
From Doc Emil: Kids will depend on protein as source of amino acids which build neurotransmitters. Diet rich in protein will help but don’t forget that training kids to study and build knowledge is one of the keys. For memory enhancer, teach kids to associate a particular information with familiar things or objects or events.
Fruits rich in vitamin C, antioxidants will help reduce cholesterol; these are citrus fruits, red grapefruit. It has also been reported in scientific literature that consumption of soy foods such as soy milk, soy bean curds and other soy bean derived food reduces low density lipoprotein (”bad cholesterol”). Fish oil, olive oil and virgin coconut oil in combination can also regulate blood cholesterol (by regulating the balance of “good and bad cholesterol”).

hello po…
I’m just asking whether alugbati can be a source of alternative glue??? if yes, kindy put reasons… plsss…
Just an I.P roject… and also needing help to u…
———————————–
From Doc Emil: While alugbati may exude a latex-like juice, its use as an alternative glue has not been considered. This does not mean you can’t experiment with that. You questions can only be answered if you try to experiment and evaluate your results. That’s the scientific approach. Go ahead try to do it. If it works, it may be a biodegradable glue.
Examples of biodegradable material: Styrofoam bits used to cushion packages are slowly being replaced by cornstarch material -the principle is like making popcorn. Â

September 15th, 2007 at 3:19 am
i just want to ask some recipe for alugbati plant.
————————————————-
From Doc Emil: Alugbati is best cooked as stir fried with some fish fillet or chicken. Alugbati can also be used with monggo lentil soup -this is the thick monggo soup.
September 24th, 2007 at 6:49 am
Pleasse help me with our research REVIEW OF RELATED LIT about the anti-obesity effect of alugbati. We are having difficulties making one becuase alugbati has not yet been linked anti obesity effect.. Thank you..
————————————————-
From Doc Emil: Information on alugbati for obesity is lacking. I would suggest that you take up the objective of determining if alugbati can reduce serum lipids in mammals. You can test this on mice for a more controlled experiment. One way of looking at the anti-obesity effect of alugbati is to locate small populations who eat alugbati on an almost daily basis and see if obesity exist in the population (as a retrospective study or what is called Case-Control Study).

Dear Doc Emil,
What herbal plants is best for hypertension, I know there are a lot but what is the best.
Thank you very much
Marie
November 11th, 2007 at 10:54 am
Dearest Doc,
I understand that garlic is good for hpertension.
Will you please advise when (morning, noon, evening) it is ideal to take, and what is the dosage (cloves).
Kind regards,
Noel
————————————————-
From Doc Emil: 2 cloves of garlic chewed, with meals at any meal would be ok. Garlic is commonly effective for mild hypertension only. What you can try is celery juice once daily -5 stalks of celery (in a juice extractor) daily can induce diuresis which in turn can lower blood pressure. Takin garlic daily can protect against stroke by making the blood less coagulable, just like taking aspirin

good day..
just want to ask if alugbati can be use as a biological stain.. and one thing more, what do biological stain means? kindly define what a biological stain really means and what are those for?
hoping for your answer.. thanks…
————————————————-
From Doc Emil: Biological stains are dyes (coloring) for animal or human tissues for microscopic examination, usually. I am not aware that alubati can be used for that. If ever i would assume that the red variety would be used. Biological stains are speciall stains for biological work and will require good quality processing before use.

You need to consult an industrial chemist or check with ITDI of DOST if they have the procedure. I don’t think you can use oregano for shoe polish because it does not have significant amount of oil. Try Jatropha instead.

COMPARE ALUGBATI WITH CONTROL DRUG SUCH AS STATINS (e.g. SIMVASTATIN) USING ANIMALS SUCH AS RABBITS. TEST FOR LIPIDS BY BLEEDING THE RABBITS. MAYBE 5 RABBITS PER GROUP. NOTE: YOU CANNOT DETERMINE THE EFFECTIVE ALUGBATI IN GRAMS UNLESS YOU TEST THIS IN ANIMALS WITH DIFFERENT AMOUNTS OF ALUGBATI PER GROUP.

February 15th, 2009 at 4:58 am
doc what is the antimicrobial activity of ceylon spinach or alugbati?
does it have any biological effect, therapeutic activity and its commercila use
FROM DR. ALIGUI: There is very little information on alugbati for anti-microbial activity. It is generally used as food; as good source of minerals and vitamins. Testing for anti-microbial activity for medicinal plants is a very tedious study because you need to prepare discs for testing the minimum inhibitory concentration and a collection of microorganisms for plating and testing. These are done in a microbiology laboratory.

good day doc!
just want to ask something. Is there any possibility that the alugbati can lower blood cholesterol levels??

March 4th, 2009 at 1:48 pm
what are the chemical components or substances that can be found in alugbati. . . thanx!
from doc emil:There is no formal analysis of alugbati but it was reported to be an excellent source of antioxidants; good source of vitamins A, B, and C, calcium and iron; also a good source of roughage
March 13th, 2009 at 10:20 am
can u plz help us in our i.p its about alugbati leaves as an alternative haert and lung cleanser
]FROM DR. ALIGUI:
Your objective of using alugbati leaves as heart and lung cleanser would be difficult to pursue since the plant has very limited documentation. At the most you can only do some dietary survey among people who have consumed alugbati and find out what the vegetable did to their cholesterol levels and maybe to their overall health. Alternatively, you can do animal models, such as using mice, to find out if it help clear cholesterol which would be beneficial to the heart. This will require much work in terms of long term observation of the laboratory animals. This cannot be dealt with in this blog and I would advice you to consult a pharmacist who can give you directions on pharmacognosy. You would also need to consult a person, perhaps a biologist, to set up the animal models. It is very difficult to set up especially if you are not familiar with the pathophysiology of what you are trying to investigate.

You’re response will highly be appreciated. Thanks so much and moe power!

Godbless,

FROM DR . EMIL: Aside from the 10 medicinal plants endorsed by the Dept. of Health, the book of Quisumbing on medicinal plants can give you many. Most of what we feature in this blog had not been studied well. However, you may want to determine the quality of sugar of yacon tuber or coconut sugar. It is said that the yacon and coconut sugar are fructo-oligosaccharides and are not digested into simple sugar. The study of medicinal plants no longer follow the usual paradigm of isolating the active ingredients because whole plant material is needed to produce a desirable biological effect. While isolating plant components is alright, any single bio-active component may not give the same result as the giving the whole plant, meaning the contents of medicinal plants are synergistic.

doc, i’m back! thank you for answering my question last time. But, i have another question that i want to ask you.. Is there any chance that the sap of kakawate or the leaves have contents that can have potential to make it a fire retardant plant?
From Dr. Emil: I don’t have any knowledge about kakawate sap or leaves having potential for fire retardant.
July 8th, 2009 at 12:37 pm
hi doc,
i do believe that alugbati can be an alternative source as a juice drink. Alugbati are leaves, they can be also tea, but a juice drink? What are the procedures to do it? What materials and ingredients do we need? yes, this is for an investigatory project. Im a second year HS student. We need advice or help! XD
please po gve me a good response. Thank you.
From Dr. Aligui: Any vegetable or herbal leaf can be extracted for juice, through a blender or juice extractor.
July 9th, 2009 at 10:27 am
hai doc…!!! i am a high school student, 4th year, i just ant to ask if what are substance present in alugbati leaves to be use in making INK?
i hope masagot nyu poh ako . . tnx
From Dr. Aligui: Soya ang ginagawang natural ink. It is still mixed with dyes. Any plant cellulose can be made into paper, tissue paper is made with a resin to make the cellulose fiber stick together and roll out as thin paper. I do not exactly know the process, only general information.

Hello once again DR. EMil. I’m Trish and yesterday I posted a comment on your blog on Santol as an antii-cancer plant. Well, I have another question regarding alugbati. Our project is “Utilizing Alugbati, Turmeric, Kangkong and Santol into Anti-cancer compounds” to see which compound from the selected plants are best to fight cancer cells. First off, could you please tell me what other phytochemicals can be found in alugbati besides anthocyanins and another one. What are other alternative biological stains for Sulforhodamine B? It would really be a big help for our study. Thank you for entertaining this comment.

COuld you also help me on understanding the vague topic which is “phytochemical screening” to gain the compound from the plants?

doc. emil…
thank you for responsing to my question last time..
but doc, we already have alugbati around us..
I just want to know if which part of the alugbati can be used to make an ink.. and..
what materials, and can you please provide me the procedure bout this….
its just for our ip..
thanks….
FROM DR ALIGUI: I have no procedures for making ink, synthetic or biodegradable. I don’t think you can make ink out of alugbati because it has no pigment except green. Try sugar beet juice instead. Extract the juice out of sugar beet and concentrate it, it will give you red ink.

Good day, Doc (: I saw this question on your blog but did not find an answer to the first two persons who asked. Here it goes: Based on the researches I’ve read, it is evident that we can produce an ink from alugbati… but HOW? Please, please answer this :’) (and email me) Also needed for our IP. Thanks.ü
GOD bless and hoping for a favorable answer from you!
From Dr. Aligui: Organic ink is a mixture of carbon and a liquid from plants as binder. This is as far as I know.

No studies have been done on anti-fungal properties of malabar nightshade. I advise you to determine that as part of your project. Test it for antifungal properties using MIC or dilution tech. Consult a microbiologist for your guidance.
